Non-volatile memory retains data when power is removed — essential for storing configuration parameters, calibration coefficients, serial numbers, MAC addresses and small event logs in embedded systems. The AT24C02 is the industry-standard 2 Kbit (256 × 8) serial EEPROM, accessed over a two-wire I²C interface at up to 400 kHz, with 1 million write cycles endurance and 100-year data retention. Up to eight AT24C02 devices can share one I²C bus via address pins, and the entire AT24Cxx family (from 128 bytes to 128 KB) shares the same protocol, making capacity upgrades a one-line BOM change. Fully second-sourced across Microchip, ST, onsemi, Giantec and Puya.
All are Microchip parts with identical I²C protocol and pinout. AT24C02 is the original 4.5-5.5 V version. 24LC02 operates from 2.5-5.5 V (wider supply range). 24AA02 operates from 1.8-5.5 V (low voltage, for battery-powered designs). Choose based on your supply rail; for 3.3 V systems, 24LC02 or 24AA02 is the right choice.
Up to eight, using the A0/A1/A2 address pins to select device addresses 0x50 through 0x57. This gives 2 KB total storage. For larger capacity, use a single bigger device like AT24C256 (32 KB) rather than cascading many small ones — it simplifies firmware and reduces bus loading.
The AT24C02 has an 8-byte page. A page write programs up to 8 bytes in a single I²C transaction and takes 5 ms total. Writing 8 bytes individually takes 8 × 5 ms = 40 ms. However, if a page write crosses a page boundary (e.g. starting at address 0x06 and writing 8 bytes), the address wraps to the start of the page and overwrites earlier data — handle this in firmware by splitting writes at page boundaries.
Somewhat. Common frauds include remarked 24C01 (128 bytes) sold as 24C02 (256 bytes), or lower-endurance clones that fail after 10,000 write cycles instead of 1 million. Verify by writing to addresses 0x80-0xFF and reading back — a real AT24C02 stores all 256 bytes; a remarked 24C01 fails above 0x7F.
