The W25Q128JV is the 128 Mbit (16 MB) flagship density of Winbond's W25QxxJV serial NOR family and the most-specified external SPI flash for firmware-heavy embedded products. Operating from 2.7 V to 3.6 V, it supports standard SPI, Dual SPI, Quad SPI and QPI instruction sets with clocks up to 133 MHz, providing the sustained bandwidth for execute-in-place, asset streaming and dual-image OTA schemes on STM32, ESP32, nRF52 and FPGA platforms.
Internally it presents 4096 erasable 4 KB sectors, 32 KB and 64 KB block erase, 256-byte page programming, 100,000-cycle erase/program endurance and 20-year retention. The JV generation adds practical production features: 3 x 256-byte security registers, a unique 64-bit serial number for device identity and anti-cloning, individual block lock bits with WP# hardware protection, and program/erase suspend-resume so time-critical reads preempt long erases. The 208-mil SOP-8 remains the maker- and repair-friendly choice, while WSON-8 and BGA-24 serve compact production assemblies.
Sourcing discipline matters more on this part than almost any other in the batch: the W25Q128JV is the single most relabeled SPI NOR in broker circulation, because smaller W25Q32/W25Q64 dies remarked as 128 Mbit yield enormous margin to counterfeiters. Authentication requires reading the JEDEC ID (Winbond 0xEF, W25Q128JV = 0x4018) and probing the full address space — write unique patterns at 8 MB and 16 MB minus one, erase, reprogram and read back; a smaller die aliases at its true boundary. Re-tinned pulls show pad wear and mismatched date codes. Genuine Winbond reels carry laser-etched marking and traceable lots. Shenzhen stock is deep; MOQ from cut tape to 2,000-pc reels.
The W25Q128JV is the highest-fraud-density part in this batch: require JEDEC-ID plus full-boundary capacity testing on every lot, avoid pricing that undercuts the Winbond channel by wide margins, and register your serial-number ranges so field returns can be traced to your purchased lots.
Same 128 Mbit density and command architecture; the FW variant runs on a 1.65-1.95 V supply for 1.8 V platforms, while the JV runs 2.7-3.6 V. JEDEC IDs differ (0x6018 vs 0x4018 family codes), so firmware should query and branch rather than hard-code one.
Read JEDEC ID (expect 0xEF 0x40 0x18), then run a boundary test: erase, program unique 256-byte patterns at 0x000000, 0x7FF000 (8 MB-1 page) and 0xFFF000 (16 MB-1 page), power cycle, and verify all three. A remarked 64 Mbit die fails the 8 MB probe. For volume lots, ask us for per-reel electrical test certificates.
Yes for the core command set — read, page program, sector/block erase, quad reads and status registers are compatible, and both use the 0x4018 device ID. The JV adds QPI-mode and refined suspend/resume; verify only that your driver does not rely on FV-specific OTP behavior.
Typical 4 KB sector erase is 45 ms (120 ms max), 64 KB block erase ~150 ms (2 s max), and chip erase ~40 s typical with a 200 s maximum. Design OTA flows around block erases with suspend/resume enabled so the main loop can still read code during updates.
Yes — the 64-bit ID (Read Unique ID 0x4B) is factory-programmed and cannot be altered, making it useful for binding firmware licenses, tracking field units, and detecting cloned boards when combined with secure-element authentication schemes.
SOP-8 208-mil is cheapest and repair-friendly but board-hungry; WSON-8 (6×5 mm or 8×6 mm) suits compact SMT lines; BGA-24 appears mainly on high-density module designs. All share the same die and command set — only footprint and pinout differ.
MOQ 1 reel (2,000 pcs SOP-8 208-mil) or 100 pcs cut tape for prototypes. Shenzhen stock ships in 1-2 business days; Winbond authorized replenishment is 8-14 weeks during NOR flash allocation.
