The AT24C02 is Microchip's (originally Atmel's) 2 Kbit serial EEPROM organized as 256 bytes of 8 bits, accessed over a two-wire I²C-compatible interface at up to 400 kHz. It provides reliable non-volatile storage with 1 million write cycles endurance and 100-year data retention — the industry-standard workhorse for storing configuration parameters, calibration coefficients, serial numbers, MAC addresses, small event logs and user preferences in embedded systems.
The I²C device address is 1010-A2-A1-A0-R/W, where A2/A1/A0 are external pins that let you connect up to eight AT24C02 chips on the same bus (giving 2 KB total storage). Page-write capability allows up to 8 bytes to be programmed in a single operation, with a typical page-write time of 5 ms. Random reads are instantaneous; sequential reads can stream the entire memory with an auto-incrementing address counter.
Hardware write protection is provided via the WP pin: tie it to VCC to lock the entire array read-only, or to GND for normal operation. Some variants (AT24C02B) offer partial-array protection via software.
Supply range is 1.8 V to 5.5 V for the AT24C02 (standard) or 2.7 V to 5.5 V for AT24C02A. Operating current is 1 mA max during write, 0.5 mA during read, and 8 µA standby. Available in DIP-8, SOP-8, TSSOP-8, MSOP-8, and DFN-8 packages.
Sister devices in the family: AT24C01 (128 bytes), AT24C04 (512 bytes), AT24C08 (1 KB), AT24C16 (2 KB with 16-byte pages), AT24C64 (8 KB), AT24C256 (32 KB), AT24C512 (64 KB), AT24C1024 (128 KB). All share the same I²C protocol with only address and page-size differences.
Fully second-sourced: Microchip, STMicroelectronics (M24C02), onsemi (CAT24C02), Giantec (GT24C02), Puya (P24C02) — all pin-and-command compatible.
Our Shenzhen stock: Microchip AT24C02D-SSHM-T (SOP-8, industrial) MOQ 3,300 pcs on reel or 100 pcs loose.
For new designs, consider AT24CS02 (adds unique 128-bit serial number) or AT24CS04 — same footprint, same protocol, and the unique ID eliminates the need for external serial-number provisioning.
All Microchip parts with identical protocol. AT24C02 is the original 4.5-5.5 V version. 24LC02 is 2.5-5.5 V (wider supply). 24AA02 is 1.8-5.5 V (low voltage). 24C02 is the generic industry name. Choose based on your supply rail.
Up to 8, using the A0/A1/A2 pins to select addresses 0x50 through 0x57. This gives 2 KB total storage. For more, use a larger single device like AT24C256 (32 KB) instead of cascading many small ones.
8 bytes for AT24C02. Page write is the fastest way to program multiple bytes — a single I²C transaction writes up to 8 bytes and takes 5 ms total. Writing 8 bytes individually takes 8 × 5 ms = 40 ms. But if your write crosses a page boundary (e.g. address 0x06 + 8 bytes), the address wraps to the start of the page and overwrites earlier data — handle this in firmware.
No. The write cycle requires stable VCC above 2.5 V (typical) for at least 5 ms. If power drops mid-write, the byte being programmed may be corrupted. Add a brown-out detector (like MCP130) to your MCU to prevent writes below the safe threshold.
Somewhat. Common frauds include remarked 24C01 (128 bytes) sold as 24C02 (256 bytes), or lower-endurance clones. Verify by writing to addresses 0x80-0xFF and reading back — a real AT24C02 stores all 256 bytes; a remarked 24C01 will fail above 0x7F.
MOQ 3,300 pcs on reel for AT24C02D-SSHM-T (SOP-8), or 100 pcs loose. Microchip authorized 8-16 weeks; Shenzhen stock 1-2 days.
