Is IRF540N still made by Infineon, or by International Rectifier?
Infineon acquired International Rectifier in January 2015. The IRF540N continues in production under the Infineon brand, with the same HEXFET trench process, same electrical specs and same TO-220 package. Marking has transitioned from "IR" logo to "infineon" logo over 2016-2020; both markings are genuine depending on production date.
Is the IRF540N counterfeit-prone?
Yes — TO-220 power MOSFETs are among the most counterfeited discrete semiconductors because of their high value and simple package. Common frauds include remarked lower-voltage MOSFETs, recycled pulls from e-waste, and clone dies with 3-10× higher Rds(on). We curve-trace every lot: genuine IRF540N shows BVdss ≥100 V, Vgs(th) 2-4 V, and Rds(on) ≤44 mΩ at Vgs=10 V. Fakes fail one or more of these.
Can IRF540N be driven directly from a 5 V Arduino?
Marginally. At Vgs=5 V, Rds(on) rises to about 90 mΩ — nearly 2× the datasheet value at Vgs=10 V. It works for currents under 5 A but wastes significant heat. For any serious current or for 3.3 V MCU drive, use a proper gate driver IC (IR2110, TC4420) or spec a logic-level MOSFET like IRL540N or IRLZ44N.
