The 2N7002 is the workhorse small-signal N-channel enhancement-mode MOSFET of the surface-mount era. Rated for 60 V drain-source, 300 mA continuous drain current, and available in the tiny SOT-23 package, it is the default choice for logic-level switching, level translation between 3.3 V and 5 V domains, and low-current load switching in almost every portable electronic product built in the last two decades.
Gate threshold voltage (Vgs(th)) is specified between 1 V and 2.5 V, which means a 3.3 V MCU output can reliably turn it on with over 1 V of overdrive; at 5 V gate drive Rds(on) drops to under 2.4 Ω (typ 1.5 Ω at 10 V gate). This is not a power MOSFET — for anything above 300 mA continuous you should look at the SI2302 (2.8 A, 20 V) or IRLML2502 (4 A, 20 V).
The part is fully second-sourced: Nexperia (2N7002, 2N7002AK), onsemi (2N7002LT1G), Diodes Inc (2N7002-7-F), Infineon, Toshiba, Vishay, and dozens of Asian vendors all produce pin-and-function compatible parts. This means pricing is highly competitive (typically $0.01-0.03 in volume) and supply risk is low, but be careful specifying a vendor on your BOM — some clones have higher gate charge or slower switching, which matters in PWM applications.
Typical uses include I2C bus level shifting (with a 10 kΩ pull-up on each side), driving small relays and LEDs from MCU GPIOs, high-side or low-side load switches under 200 mA, ESD steering in low-speed data lines, and signal muxing.
Shenzhen stock is abundant. Nexperia 2N7002,215 (SOT-23 tape-and-reel, 3,000 pcs) is our default. MOQ 3,000 pcs on reel or 100 pcs loose.
Specify the exact vendor part number (e.g. Nexperia 2N7002,215 or onsemi 2N7002LT1G) on your BOM — generic "2N7002" invites the assembler to substitute a random clone with different gate charge characteristics.
Both are SOT-23 N-channel logic-level MOSFETs. 2N7002 is rated 60 V / 300 mA with Rds(on) ~2.4 Ω. BSS138 is rated 50 V / 200 mA with Rds(on) ~3.5 Ω. They are functionally interchangeable in most circuits under 200 mA and 30 V; 2N7002 has slightly better specs at similar price.
Only for tiny motors under 200 mA. Gate charge is ~1.5 nC so switching speed is fine up to a few hundred kHz, but the 2.4 Ω Rds(on) dissipates 0.1 W at 200 mA which is close to the SOT-23 limit. For higher currents use SI2302 or AO3400.
Strongly recommended. The gate is capacitive and can float when the MCU pin is high-Z (during reset or deep sleep). A 10-100 kΩ pull-down keeps the MOSFET off and prevents accidental load turn-on. Also add a 100 Ω series gate resistor to damp ringing on fast edges.
Moderately. It has built-in gate-source zener clamping (~±20 V) but the gate oxide can still be damaged by direct ESD events. Handle with grounded wrist straps and use ESD-safe packaging. For exposed connectors, add a TVS diode upstream.
Nexperia genuine parts have laser-etched marking "V04" or similar 3-character code, matte tin leads, and a small notch on pin 1. Common fakes are remarked lower-spec parts. Verify by measuring Rds(on) at Vgs=4.5 V — genuine parts read under 2.4 Ω; clones often exceed 5 Ω.
MOQ 3,000 pcs on reel for Nexperia 2N7002,215. Shenzhen stock ships in 1-2 days; authorized Nexperia channel replenishment is 4-8 weeks.
