The 1N4148 is the universal high-speed silicon switching diode — arguably the most-produced semiconductor device in history, with annual global shipments measured in the tens of billions. Rated for 100 V peak reverse voltage, 200 mA continuous forward current, and 4 ns reverse recovery time, it is the default choice for signal rectification, clipping, clamping, steering and any general-purpose switching application where power dissipation stays under 500 mW.
The device is available in the classic DO-35 hermetic glass axial package (through-hole, hand-solderable) and in surface-mount variants: SOD-123 (1N4148W), SOD-323 (1N4148WS), SOD-27 (SMT-27), and MELF (LL4148). All variants are electrically identical; choose package based on assembly process and board density.
Key parameters: forward voltage 1 V typ at 10 mA (0.72 V at 1 mA, 1.2 V at 100 mA), reverse leakage 25 nA max at 20 V reverse bias and 25 °C (rises to 5 µA at 150 °C), and reverse recovery time 4 ns measured at IF = IR = 10 mA. This speed makes it suitable for switching at frequencies into the tens of MHz, far beyond what a 1N4001 rectifier (30 µs recovery) can handle.
Fully second-sourced: Nexperia (1N4148), onsemi, Vishay, Diodes Inc, STMicroelectronics, ROHM, and dozens of Asian vendors produce compatible parts. Pricing is extremely competitive — typically $0.005-0.02 in volume — with negligible supply risk.
Common uses: freewheel diodes on small relays and solenoids, signal clipping and clamping in audio circuits, voltage doublers and charge pumps under 200 mA, logic steering, ESD protection on low-speed data lines, and reverse-polarity protection on small loads.
Our Shenzhen stock covers all major packages. Nexperia 1N4148W (SOD-123) MOQ 3,000 pcs on reel; 1N4148 DO-35 axial MOQ 5,000 pcs (ammo pack) or 100 pcs loose.
For modern surface-mount designs, standardize on 1N4148W (SOD-123) — it fits the same footprint as most other small-signal diodes and simplifies BOM consolidation across projects.
Not usually. 1N4001 is a 50 V / 1 A rectifier with 30 µs recovery — 7,500× slower than 1N4148. Use 1N4001 for mains rectification and slow switching; use 1N4148 for signal, high-speed switching and small flyback. 1N4148 cannot handle 1 A continuous; 1N4001 cannot switch above 1 kHz cleanly.
Functionally identical. 1N914 is the older JEDEC designation; 1N4148 is the modern military-spec version with slightly tighter reverse leakage. In practice they are interchangeable in every circuit.
Yes, for small relays with coil current under 100 mA (like 5 V signal relays). For larger relays (12 V, 200+ mA), use 1N4001 or a Schottky SS34 to handle the initial surge.
It depends on current. At 1 mA the Vf is ~0.72 V; at 10 mA it's ~1.0 V; at 100 mA it's ~1.2 V. The 1 V figure is the datasheet maximum at 10 mA. For precision clipping circuits, use the Shockley equation to model Vf at your specific current.
No, it's a standard PN junction diode. Schottky equivalents are the BAT54 (30 V, 200 mA, Vf=0.25 V) or 1N5817 (20 V, 1 A, Vf=0.45 V). Use Schottky when you need lower forward drop or faster recovery, but note higher reverse leakage.
MOQ 3,000 pcs on reel for SOD-123 variant, or 100 pcs loose for DO-35 axial. Shenzhen stock ships 1-2 days; authorized Nexperia 4-8 weeks.
