Espressif Systems is the Shanghai-based fabless semiconductor company behind the ESP8266 and ESP32, the two most popular Wi-Fi SoC families in the IoT world. Founded in 2008 and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market (688018) since 2019, Espressif designs all its own RF and digital silicon, from the original ESP8266EX through the dual-core Xtensa ESP32 to the newer RISC-V parts ESP32-C3, C6 and H2. The ESP32-WROOM-32 is the reference module that appears on thousands of commercial and hobbyist products; the ESP-12F is the classic Ai-Thinker module built around the ESP8266EX; and the ESP32-C3-MINI-1 brings Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth LE 5 to a compact RISC-V core positioned as the ESP8266's successor. The ecosystem spans ESP-IDF, Arduino, Zephyr, MicroPython and ESPHome. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks ESP32-WROOM-32, ESP-12F and ESP32-C3-MINI-1 from Espressif authorized distribution, with module-level anti-clone screening on every reel.
Espressif modules (ESP32-WROOM-32, ESP32-C3-MINI-1) are manufactured by Espressif itself and carry its laser marking, shield-can branding and traceability codes. Counterfeit modules use remarked or rejected chips, undersized crystals and poor RF shielding — they pass a bench test but fail range, throughput or brown-out checks. We verify by reading the MAC address block against Espressif's assigned OUI ranges, checking AT+GMR firmware build strings, and running an RF sensitivity sample test. For ESP-12F we confirm genuine Ai-Thinker build quality versus unlicensed copies.
Espressif still produces the ESP8266EX and ESP-12F, and the SDK is maintained, but the company positions the ESP32-C3 as its successor: single-core RISC-V at 160 MHz, Bluetooth LE 5, better security (secure boot, flash encryption), lower deep-sleep current and a pinout designed to drop into many ESP8266 footprints. For new products requiring long supply horizon, Wi-Fi 6-era compatibility or BLE, choose ESP32-C3; for cost-driven maintenance builds of existing ESP8266 products, the ESP-12F remains available.
Yes — Espressif Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. was founded in 2008, employs over 700 people including a large RF design team, and IPO'd on the Shanghai STAR Market in July 2019 (ticker 688018). Espressif designs all its own silicon — ESP32 is not a rebadge — with wafers fabbed at TSMC. Its chips ship in the hundreds of millions annually inside consumer, industrial and smart-home products worldwide.
Espressif authorized channel quotes 6-12 weeks for popular modules, with the ESP32-WROOM-32 and ESP32-C3-MINI-1 occasionally allocated during demand spikes. Our Shenzhen warehouse holds stock of all three modules we list for 1-2 day shipment, and we can supply full-reel quantities with the original Espressif moisture-barrier packaging intact.
