The TL072 is TI's dual JFET-input operational amplifier and remains the standard answer when a circuit needs high input impedance with low bias current. The matched JFET input pair draws only 65 pA typical and 200 pA maximum at 25 °C — roughly 7 nA maximum across the full 0 °C to 70 °C range — and presents about 1 TΩ of differential input resistance. That makes the TL072 the natural choice for charge amplifiers, piezo pickups, photodiode transimpedance stages, precision integrators and sample-and-hold circuits where a bipolar input would leak away the signal.
AC performance is far better than the classic LM358/LM324 generation: gain-bandwidth product is 3 MHz typical, slew rate 13 V/µs typical, and input voltage noise density 18 nV/√Hz at 1 kHz with 1.4 µVRMS in the 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz band. Quiescent current is 1.4 mA typical per amplifier (2.5 mA maximum), open-loop gain is 25 V/mV minimum and 200 V/mV typical, CMRR and PSRR are 100 dB typical, and the output swings to ±12 V minimum into 10 kΩ loads from ±15 V rails. A distinctive feature is the common-mode input range, which extends up to and includes VCC+ — the opposite of the LM324 — so the part can be used in high-side sensing configurations that include the positive rail.
TI offers the TL072C (0 °C to 70 °C), TL072I (−40 °C to +85 °C) and TL072M (−55 °C to +125 °C) temperature grades, plus the TL072A and TL072B offset grades at 6 mV and 3 mV maximum versus 10 mV for the base part. The newer TL072H is a re-spun die in the same pinout with 1 mV typical offset, 20 V/µs slew rate, 940 µA per channel and operation from ±2.25 V to ±20 V — a worthwhile upgrade for new designs. Note that, unlike the single TL071, the dual TL072 has no offset-null pins, so DC-critical designs must trim in firmware or with an external summing node.
Second sources include STMicroelectronics, onsemi, Nisshinbo/JRC and numerous Asian fabs, all pin-compatible in DIP-8, SOIC-8 and TSSOP-8. Pricing is stable and stock is deep; MOQ is 1 reel (2,500 pcs SOIC-8) or 100 pcs loose. Because the TL072 is popular in guitar pedals and DIY audio, remarked parts circulate on broker markets — check laser marking and verify input bias current on a sample, since clones often use bipolar die with nanoamp-level bias.
Buy the TL072ID (SOIC-8, −40 °C to +85 °C) rather than the TL072CP for any product that leaves the bench — the price difference is negligible and it removes a common field-failure excuse; ask for the grade and vendor to be printed on the BOM line.
TL072, TL072A and TL072B are the same original die with progressively tighter input offset limits: 10 mV, 6 mV and 3 mV maximum respectively. The TL072H is a newer process with 1 mV typical offset, 20 V/µs slew rate, lower supply current and a wider ±2.25 V to ±20 V supply range while remaining pin-compatible.
Choose the TL072 when the source impedance is high (above about 10 kΩ) or when input bias current matters — its 65 pA JFET input produces negligible offset error, while the NE5532 draws 200 nA. Choose the NE5532 when the source is low impedance and voltage noise dominates: 5 nV/√Hz beats the TL072's 18 nV/√Hz, and it drives 600 Ω loads far better.
Yes, down to a total of 4.5 V to 5 V with a mid-rail bias reference, although the datasheet specifies ±5 V to ±18 V dual supplies. Because the input range includes VCC+ but not VCC−, single-supply circuits need the signal biased a few volts above ground; the TLV2372 or LMV358 is usually simpler if the design must sense down to 0 V.
JFET-input op-amps of this generation do not tolerate inputs driven below VCC−: the input stage can phase-reverse or latch until power is cycled. Keep the common-mode voltage inside the specified range, add series resistance and clamping diodes on external connectors, and consider a modern part with over-the-rail input capability if users can force the pin.
TI lists the TL072 family as Active with a long-term product commitment, and the TL07xH generation extends the roadmap. For new designs that need lower offset and higher speed in the same socket, specify TL072H; for the widest second-source pool, the base TL072C/TL072ID remains the safest choice.
Measure input bias current — a genuine TL072 reads in the tens of picoamps with a simple charge-decay or feedback-resistor test, while remarked bipolar clones read in the nanoamps. Also check laser-etched marking, pin plating under magnification, and date-code consistency within a reel. We X-ray and electrically sample every lot we ship.
MOQ 1 reel (2,500 pcs SOIC-8) or 100 pcs loose for prototypes; DIP-8 is available in tube quantities for hand-assembly lines. Shenzhen stock ships in 1-2 days, TI authorized channel replenishment takes 5-10 days for standard grades.
