The CP2102-GMR is Silicon Labs' highly integrated USB-to-UART bridge controller, providing a complete plug-and-play serial conversion solution in a compact QFN-28 package. Unlike earlier USB-serial chips that required external EEPROM, oscillator, voltage regulator and level shifters, the CP2102 integrates all of these on-die — the external BOM shrinks to just a USB connector, a few decoupling capacitors, and optionally a 4.7 µH inductor if you want to use the internal regulator to power the target MCU.
Electrical specs: USB 2.0 full-speed (12 Mbps) upstream, asynchronous UART downstream with baud rates from 300 bps to 1 Mbps, hardware flow control (RTS/CTS) and full modem control signals (DTR, DSR, RI, DCD). The on-chip 512-byte EEPROM stores vendor ID, product ID, product description string and serial number — you can program custom branding at production time using Silicon Labs' free AN721 customization tool.
The internal 3.3 V regulator can supply up to 100 mA to external circuitry, which often eliminates the need for a separate LDO in small designs. Supply range is 3.0 V to 3.6 V; the chip also supports self-powered and bus-powered USB configurations.
Compared with WCH's CH340G (~$0.50), the CP2102-GMR costs ~$2-3 in volume but offers significantly better driver quality (native CDC-ACM on Windows 10/11/macOS/Linux without any driver install), tighter baud rate accuracy (±0.5% vs ±2%), and robust ESD tolerance (±15 kV HBM on USB pins). This makes it the preferred choice for professional and industrial designs where field reliability matters.
Variants: CP2102N (QFN-24, no EEPROM but adds more GPIO), CP2104 (QFN-24, single UART with GPIO), CP2105 (QFN-24, dual UART), CP2108 (QFN-64, quad UART).
Our Shenzhen stock: Silicon Labs CP2102-GMR (QFN-28) MOQ 1,500 pcs on reel or 100 pcs loose. Customization service available (burn your VID/PID before shipment).
For new designs where 1 Mbps is enough, CP2102N (QFN-24) is smaller and cheaper than CP2102-GMR while keeping the same driver quality — consider it unless you need the on-chip EEPROM for custom branding.
CH340 is 5× cheaper and adequate for consumer and hobbyist products. CP2102 is more robust: better driver support (native CDC-ACM on all modern OS), tighter baud rate accuracy (±0.5% vs ±2%), better ESD tolerance (±15 kV), and customizable EEPROM. For professional, industrial or medical designs, spec CP2102.
Yes — the on-chip 512-byte EEPROM stores vendor ID, product ID, product description string, serial number and manufacturer string. Use Silicon Labs' free AN721 customization tool (Windows GUI) or the CP210x Customization Utility. We can pre-program your custom IDs before shipment at no extra cost.
1 Mbps stable, with some configurations reaching 2 Mbps. For higher speeds (3-12 Mbps), use CP2102N (up to 3 Mbps) or FT232H (up to 12 Mbps MPSSE mode).
No — the oscillator is fully integrated. This is a major advantage over CH340G which requires an external 12 MHz crystal. Your BOM shrinks by one component.
Yes — Silicon Labs parts are heavily counterfeited. Genuine chips have laser-etched "SILABS" logo plus exact part number and lot code, matte tin leads, and correct weight. Fakes are often remarked CH340 dies that only work at low baud rates. Test at 921,600 bps with a real board — genuine CP2102 is error-free; fakes drop bytes.
MOQ 1,500 pcs on reel for CP2102-GMR (QFN-28), or 100 pcs loose. Silicon Labs authorized 16-26 weeks; Shenzhen stock 1-3 days. Custom VID/PID programming adds 3-5 days.
