CP2102 vs CP2102N — which should I use for new designs?
CP2102N is the newer generation: smaller QFN-24 package (vs QFN-28), adds 7 GPIO pins, supports up to 3 Mbps baud (vs 1 Mbps), and uses one-time-programmable fuses instead of EEPROM for customization. CP2102-GMR remains the right choice if you need the 512-byte EEPROM for frequent re-programming or if your existing layout is designed for QFN-28. For new designs, evaluate CP2102N first.
Can you program custom VID/PID into CP2102 before shipment?
Yes — we offer pre-programming services using Silicon Labs' official AN721 Customization Utility. Send us your desired Vendor ID, Product ID, product description string and serial number format, and we will burn them into the on-chip EEPROM before shipment. This service adds 3-5 days to lead time and is free for orders above 1,000 pcs.
Is the CP2102 counterfeit-prone?
Yes — Silicon Labs interface ICs are heavily counterfeited because of their high value and simple QFN package. Common frauds include remarked CH340 dies (which fail at high baud rates and lack the EEPROM), recycled pulls from e-waste, and clone dies with poor charge-pump performance. We verify every lot by running a 1-hour stress test at 921,600 bps: genuine CP2102 is error-free; fakes drop bytes.
What is Silicon Labs' lead time?
Silicon Labs authorized channel currently quotes 16-26 weeks for CP210x parts, which is among the longest of any vendor we stock. Our Shenzhen warehouse typically holds 2,000-5,000 pcs of CP2102-GMR for 1-3 day shipment. For volume orders above 5,000 pcs, plan on authorized-channel lead time.
