The TJA1050 is NXP's classic high-speed CAN transceiver, the physical-layer workhorse that sits between a CAN controller (MCP2515, SJA1000, or any MCU bxCAN) and the differential CANH/CANL bus. It supports data rates up to 1 Mbps as required by ISO 11898-2, with a slope-controlled driver optimized for low electromagnetic emission and a differential receiver with wide common-mode range (-2 V to +7 V) that keeps communication robust on noisy automotive and industrial wiring.
Designed for 5 V systems, the TJA1050 operates from 4.75 V to 5.25 V, drawing a maximum of 13 mA in the recessive state. A mode-select pin S (pin 8) chooses high-speed operation (S low or unconnected) or silent mode (S high), which disables the transmitter while keeping the receiver active — useful for listen-only bus monitors. Protection features matter in field deployments: both bus pins are short-circuit proof to battery and ground, thermal protection at roughly 165 °C junction shuts the transmitter down without disturbing the rest of the IC, and a TXD-dominant timeout prevents a stuck controller from locking the entire network. Notably, the TJA1050 has no low-power standby mode — nodes that must sleep on the bus should use the TJA1051T/3 instead, which adds standby and an INH output for voltage regulators.
In the 8-pin SOIC (and legacy DIP-8 variants from second sources), the TJA1050 is the default transceiver on countless CAN breakout boards and ECU prototypes. NXP positions it in the mainstream high-speed CAN family; alternatives include TI's SN65HVD230 (3.3 V) and the TJA1042. Counterfeiting of this part is moderate but real in broker markets — genuine NXP parts have sharp laser marking and consistent date-code fonts. Shenzhen stock is broad, MOQ typically 1 reel (2,500 pcs) or 50 pcs loose.
Specify TJA1050T/CM (the current SO-8 ordering code) on the BOM to avoid receiving older DIP or non-green variants, and pair it with a common-mode choke plus TVS array for automotive EMC compliance.
Both are 5 V high-speed transceivers rated 1 Mbps. The TJA1051 adds a low-power standby mode with wake-up on bus traffic, a higher bus common-mode range, an INH pin to control the system regulator, and better ESD ratings. The TJA1050 has no sleep mode and always draws supply current — choose TJA1051T/3 for battery-powered nodes.
The TJA1050 needs a 4.75-5.25 V supply, but its TXD and RXD pins are compatible with 3.3 V logic: TXD accepts logic low below 0.3 x VCC and RXD drives a push-pull output that most 3.3 V MCUs tolerate. A common pattern is powering the transceiver at 5 V and level-checking RXD — if your MCU is not 5 V tolerant, add a divider or level shifter on RXD only.
NXP still lists the TJA1050T as Active, but new designs are steered toward the TJA1051 family. Stock availability is excellent and the part will remain available for years under NXP longevity commitments.
Pin 8 (S) is a mode-select input, not a standby pin. Leave it unconnected or tie it to ground for normal high-speed mode. Connecting S to VCC selects silent mode: the transmitter is disabled while the receiver stays active, which is ideal for listen-only bus monitors and sniffers. Full pinout: 1 TXD, 2 GND, 3 VCC, 4 RXD, 5 Vref, 6 CANL, 7 CANH, 8 S.
Inspect the marking: genuine NXP uses laser-etched, evenly aligned text with a clean pin-1 dimple. Bench-test loop delay and dominant/recessive thresholds — clones often violate the ISO 11898-2 output levels (differential 1.5-3.0 V dominant). We X-ray and electrically sample every reel sourced from brokers.
Yes. An unpowered TJA1050 presents a high-impedance load and does not disturb bus traffic, which is one reason it is favored in mixed-power ECU networks. The bus pins tolerate -27 V to +40 V DC at CANH/CANL per the absolute maximum ratings, and 4 kV HBM ESD.
MOQ 1 reel (2,500 pcs SO-8) for production, 50 pcs loose for prototyping. Shenzhen stock ships in 1-2 business days; NXP authorized channel lead time is 8-14 weeks for large volumes.
