Founded: 2006 · HQ: Eindhoven, Netherlands
NXP Semiconductors is one of the world's largest automotive and industrial chip suppliers, spun off from Philips in 2006 and headquartered in Eindhoven, Netherlands, with dual listings on NASDAQ and Euronext. NXP inherited Philips' decades-deep automotive CAN/LIN transceiver expertise and remains the dominant supplier of CAN physical-layer chips — the TJA1050 high-speed CAN transceiver is the reference design used on countless ECUs, industrial drives and development boards, including many Arduino CAN shields. NXP's broader portfolio spans automotive microcontrollers (S32, i.MX RT crossover MCUs), NFC (it co-invented the standard), secure authentication ICs, RF power amplifiers for 5G infrastructure, and the LPC/Kinetis microcontroller families. TJA1050 implements the ISO 11898-2 physical layer at up to 1 MBd with excellent EMC performance and bus-fail-safe behavior up to ±36 V. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks the TJA1050 CAN transceiver from NXP authorized distribution, with marking and bus-level electrical verification on every lot.
The TJA1050 is classified NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs) by NXP, though it remains in production with a large installed base and continued availability. For new designs NXP recommends the TJA1051T/3 (same footprint family, adds standby mode with remote wake-up and better EMC) or TJA1042. Existing TJA1050 designs are fully supported — we keep stock for maintenance builds, and can quote the TJA1051 as a near drop-in upgrade on the same RFQ.
Yes — TJA1050 and TJA1042 are frequently remarked from lower-grade stock or pulled from e-waste boards. Fakes typically show wrong dominant/recessive differential levels, missing bus-fail-safe clamping, and ESD weakness that kills ECUs in the field. We source from NXP authorized distribution and sample-verify each lot on a CAN test bench: dominant VOD 1.5-3.0 V, recessive behavior, ±36 V bus-fault tolerance and loopback at 1 MBd.
Yes. Direct and near-direct alternatives include Microchip MCP2551 (5 V, pin-compatible function, different pinout) and MCP2562, TI SN65HVD230/231 (3.3 V — note TJA1050 is 5 V only) and TCAN334. For 5 V designs needing a drop-in, the NXP TJA1051T/3 is the cleanest migration path. We can quote NXP authorized stock plus vetted second sources on the same RFQ for landed-cost comparison.
NXP authorized channel currently quotes 10-18 weeks for standard interface products, shorter than during the 2021-2023 automotive allocation period. Our Shenzhen warehouse holds TJA1050 stock for 1-3 day shipment on quantities under 10,000 pcs, with full lot traceability and C-of-C available for automotive and industrial customers.
