The ATmega328P-PU is the 8-bit AVR microcontroller at the heart of the Arduino Uno and thousands of derivative boards. It combines 32 KB of in-system-programmable Flash, 2 KB SRAM and 1 KB EEPROM with a RISC core executing one instruction per clock at up to 20 MHz, delivering roughly 20 MIPS while drawing under 200 µA/MHz in active mode and 0.1 µA in power-down. For hobbyist projects and simple embedded control it remains the reference design point.
The peripheral set includes a 10-bit ADC with 8 channels (6 on the DIP-28 package), two 8-bit timers, one 16-bit timer with PWM, a USART, a 2-wire I2C interface, an SPI master/slave port, and a programmable watchdog timer with its own on-chip oscillator. Six sleep modes cover idle, ADC noise reduction, power-save, power-down, standby and extended standby.
Because the 328P-PU comes in a through-hole DIP-28, it is the go-to MCU for breadboard prototyping, education, and designs that must be field-serviceable without a reflow oven. Bootloader support is universal — the Arduino IDE ships with the optiboot bootloader pre-configured, and any ISP programmer (USBasp, AVRISP mkII, Arduino-as-ISP) can burn a blank chip in under a minute.
Supply range is 1.8 V to 5.5 V for the "P" variant (low-power) and 2.7 V to 5.5 V for standard. Direct 5 V operation lets it drive relays and LED matrices without level shifting. Microchip lists the part as Active with a Longevity Program commitment through at least 2040.
Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks both genuine Microchip ATmega328P-PU and the pre-programmed Arduino bootloader variant. MOQ 1 tube (15 pcs DIP-28) or 500 pcs for volume.
For volume production, migrate to the TQFP-32 or MLF-32 package — same die, cheaper per unit, and much smaller PCB footprint. Keep the DIP version only for user-serviceable or socketed applications.
The "P" indicates the picoPower variant with lower active and sleep current, and support for 1.8 V operation. Non-P version requires 2.7 V minimum. Functionally and pin-out identical; always specify ATmega328P-PU for new designs.
Not directly. The PB variant adds an extra USART, extra timer, and unique ID, but relocates some pins and changes the reset pin to also function as GPIO. Firmware written for 328P may need pin remapping to run on 328PB.
Yes — that's the standard Arduino Pro Mini 3.3V/8MHz configuration. At 3.3 V the maximum safe frequency is 10 MHz per the datasheet voltage-frequency curve. Do not run 16 MHz at 3.3 V.
Genuine Microchip parts have laser-etched "ATMEL" (now Microchip) logo plus the exact part number and date code, matte-tin leads, and a small dimple or notch on pin 1. Counterfeits often show blurred silk print, shiny leads, or wrong font. Read the signature bytes (0x1E 0x95 0x0F for 328P) with avrdude — clones report different values.
Electrically identical. DIP-28 (suffix -PU) is through-hole, easy to hand-solder and socket-mount. TQFP-32 (suffix -AU) and MLF/QFN-32 (suffix -MU) are surface-mount for compact PCBs. DIP has fewer I/O (23 vs 27) because 4 pins are used for power.
MOQ 1 tube (15 pcs) for prototype quantities, or 500 pcs for volume. Microchip authorized channel lead time is 12-26 weeks; our Shenzhen stock typically has 5,000-20,000 pcs on hand.
