Founded: 2003 (InvenSense); acquired by TDK 2017 · HQ: San Jose, California, USA
TDK InvenSense (formerly InvenSense Inc., acquired by TDK Corporation in 2017) is a leading designer of MEMS motion sensors — gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers, microphones and ultrasonic time-of-flight sensors — headquartered in San Jose, California with major R&D and manufacturing in Taiwan and Japan. InvenSense pioneered the consumer 6-axis IMU with the MPU-6050 in 2010, the first MEMS gyroscope+accelerometer combo small and cheap enough for hobbyist drones, wearables and balance robots. The company's product line now spans the MPU-6xxx/9xxx motion tracking family, ICM-2xxxx industrial IMUs, T58xx microphones and CH-101 ultrasonic ToF sensors. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks MPU-6050 from TDK authorized distribution, with device ID and I²C address verification on every lot.
No — TDK InvenSense marked MPU-6050 as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs) around 2018. It remains available and heavily documented in open-source drone and robot communities, but for new production designs we recommend ICM-20602 (higher performance, Active status, same QFN-24 footprint), MPU-6500 (SPI + I²C) or BMI160 (Bosch, lower cost, similar features).
MPU-9250 adds a 3-axis magnetometer (AK8963 die co-packaged), has lower gyro noise (0.004 vs 0.005 °/s/√Hz), higher sample rates, and supports SPI at 20 MHz. Package is slightly larger QFN-24 3×3 mm vs 4×4 mm. MPU-9250 is Active status; MPU-6050 is NRND. For new 9-axis designs, choose MPU-9250 or ICM-20948.
Moderately. Because the part is NRND and production volume has declined, broker stock is often recycled pulls from e-waste or remarked lower-spec clones. We verify every lot by reading the WHO_AM_I register (should return 0x68), checking I²C address response at 0x68/0x69, and measuring baseline gyro noise on a 30-pc sample.
TDK authorized channel is limited for NRND parts — expect 16-26 weeks if available at all. Our Shenzhen warehouse holds broker stock with 1-3 day shipment, but we recommend migrating new designs to ICM-20602 which is Active and has 8-12 week authorized lead time.
