Founded: 2009 · HQ: Cambridge, United Kingdom
Raspberry Pi Ltd is the British computer company behind the world's best-selling single-board computer family, founded in 2009 in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and a subsidiary of Raspberry Pi Holdings plc, which listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 2024. Beyond complete boards, Raspberry Pi designs its own silicon: the RP2040 is a dual-core Arm Cortex-M0+ microcontroller running at 133 MHz with 264 KB of SRAM, a unique programmable I/O (PIO) subsystem, and no internal flash — designs pair it with external QSPI memory. The RP2040 powers the Raspberry Pi Pico and hundreds of third-party boards, with a mature ecosystem spanning MicroPython, CircuitPython, the Arduino core and the official C SDK. Raspberry Pi has committed to keeping RP2040 in production until at least January 2036. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks RP2040 chips from Raspberry Pi authorized distribution, with USB device-ID verification on every reel to reject relabeled clones.
Genuine RP2040 silicon comes only from Raspberry Pi's supply chain — there is no licensed second source, so any chip not traceable to authorized distribution is suspect. We check batch marking and reel labeling, then functionally verify samples by holding BOOTSEL during reset: a genuine RP2040 enumerates on USB with Raspberry Pi's vendor ID 0x2E8A and mass-storage PID 0xF00A, and the exposed flash filesystem reports the correct board identity. Clones typically fail enumeration or show non-Raspberry Pi USB IDs.
Raspberry Pi Ltd is a substantial UK company with annual revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars, wholly owned by Raspberry Pi Holdings plc (listed on the London Stock Exchange since June 2024 under ticker RPI). Its roots trace to the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the Cambridge-based educational charity that launched the original Model B in 2012. The company designs RP2040/RP2350 silicon in Cambridge and manufactures through contracted facilities including Sony's plant in South Wales.
RP2040 executes code from external QSPI flash (XIP — execute-in-place), so every design needs a serial NOR flash such as the W25Q64JV, W25Q128JV or GD25Q64 connected to the QSPI pins. Raspberry Pi's own Pico boards use 2 MB; most applications need 2-16 MB. Boot ROM support covers flash up to 16 MB without custom boot stages. We can quote matched RP2040 + W25Q flash kits so both ship from the same warehouse.
After the 2021-2023 chip shortage, RP2040 supply has fully normalized: authorized channel quotes 6-12 weeks, and our Shenzhen warehouse holds stock for 1-3 day shipment. Raspberry Pi has publicly committed to manufacturing RP2040 and Pico boards until at least January 2036, making it one of the safest long-lifecycle MCU sockets available for new designs.
