The ADS1115 is Texas Instruments' precision 16-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter with four single-ended or two differential input channels, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), integrated voltage reference, and I²C interface. It was designed specifically for measuring small signals from sensors — thermocouples, RTDs, load cells, strain gauges, pH electrodes, current shunts — where the noise-free resolution of a 12-bit MCU ADC is inadequate.
The delta-sigma architecture oversamples the input at up to 860 samples per second and digitally filters down to a 16-bit result, giving effective resolution of 14-15 bits depending on data rate. The PGA offers gains from ±6.144 V (÷1) down to ±0.256 V (×24), which lets you measure millivolt-level sensor outputs without an external instrumentation amplifier. Combined with the internal 2.048 V reference (0.05% accuracy, 15 ppm/°C drift), you can build a complete precision measurement front-end with only four external capacitors.
Additional features: an on-chip oscillator (no external clock needed), a programmable comparator with alert pin that can trigger interrupts when input exceeds thresholds, single-shot and continuous conversion modes, and power-down between conversions for battery applications (0.5 µA typical).
Supply range is 2.0 V to 5.5 V, drawing 150 µA in continuous mode at 128 SPS. I²C address is selectable between 0x48, 0x49, 0x4A and 0x4B via the ADDR pin, so up to four ADS1115 (16 channels total) can share one bus.
Sister parts: ADS1113 (2 channels, no PGA, no comparator), ADS1114 (2 channels with PGA and comparator), ADS1015 (12-bit version, 3300 SPS, faster). Choose based on channel count, resolution and speed requirements.
Our Shenzhen stock: VSSOP-10 ADS1115IDGSR, MOQ 2,500 pcs on reel or 100 pcs loose.
For production test fixtures, buy ADS1115IDGST (cut-tape) rather than IDGSR (full reel) — the 250-pc mini-reel is much more economical for small batches.
ADS1115 is 16-bit at up to 860 SPS; ADS1015 is 12-bit at up to 3300 SPS. Same package, same pinout, same I²C protocol, ~same price. Use ADS1115 for precision measurement (load cells, thermocouples); use ADS1015 for higher-speed, lower-resolution tasks like vibration monitoring.
Wire the load cell in a Wheatstone bridge, feed the two output wires into AIN0 and AIN1 (differential mode). Set PGA to ±0.256 V (gain ×24) for a typical 2 mV/V load cell at 5 V excitation. Read at 128 SPS for maximum noise-free resolution. Subtract the zero-load offset, then multiply by a calibration factor.
Single-ended measures each of AIN0-AIN3 relative to GND — you get 4 channels but reject nothing. Differential measures AIN0-AIN1 and AIN2-AIN3 — you get 2 channels but reject common-mode noise, doubling your SNR for floating sources like load cells and thermocouples.
No — the ADS1115 has an internal reference only and does not expose a REF pin. If you need external reference flexibility, use ADS1256 (24-bit, 8 channels, external REF) or ADS1118 (16-bit, 4 channels, internal SPI).
±0.05% initial accuracy (1 mV at 2.048 V) and 15 ppm/°C drift. Over a -40 to +85 °C range, worst-case drift is ±0.19%, so total error is around ±0.25%. For tighter accuracy, calibrate against a known reference at production and store correction coefficients in EEPROM.
MOQ 2,500 pcs on reel for ADS1115IDGSR (VSSOP-10), or 100 pcs loose. TI authorized 12-20 weeks; Shenzhen stock 1-2 days.
