The PC817 is Sharp's iconic 4-pin photocoupler: an infrared-emitting GaAs LED optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor inside a compact DIP-4 (or SOP-4) package. It provides 5,000 Vrms of isolation between input and output while passing DC signals up to a few hundred kilohertz, making it the default choice for breaking ground loops, isolating microcontroller logic from mains-referenced circuits, and closing the feedback loop in switch-mode power supplies.
Key parameters: forward current 50 mA max (typical drive 5-20 mA), collector-emitter voltage 80 V, current transfer ratio (CTR) 50% to 600% depending on the suffix (PC817A: 80-160%, PC817B: 130-260%, PC817C: 200-400%, PC817D: 300-600%), and rise/fall times around 4 µs / 5 µs with a 100 Ω load — which limits useful bandwidth to roughly 100 kHz.
The CTR range is wide and varies significantly with temperature and age, so designs must accommodate worst-case: design for minimum CTR at high temperature and end-of-life (typical derating factor 50% after 10 years at high LED current). For digital isolation this rarely matters, but for SMPS feedback loops it forces generous design margins.
Modern alternatives with better specs include the LTV-817 (Lite-On, direct clone), EL817 (Everlight), and — for higher bandwidth and lower CTR spread — the digital isolators like TI ISO7721 or Silicon Labs Si8621 (which use capacitive isolation and support 100+ Mbps).
Shenzhen stock: PC817C (CTR 200-400%, DIP-4) and PC817S (SOP-4 gull-wing) are the most common. MOQ 100 pcs loose or 1,000 pcs on tape for the SOP variant.
For modern high-reliability designs, consider replacing PC817 with a digital isolator (ISO7721, Si8621) — they offer 100× the bandwidth, tighter CTR tolerance, and 40-year life without LED degradation.
CTR = Current Transfer Ratio = output collector current / input LED forward current, expressed as a percentage. PC817A: 80-160%, B: 130-260%, C: 200-400%, D: 300-600%. Higher CTR means less LED drive current for a given output, extending LED life but narrowing dynamic range.
PC817C (200-400%) is the industry standard for TL431+PC817 flyback feedback. It provides enough gain margin at end-of-life without over-driving the LED. Match with a TL431 cathode resistor sized for 5-10 mA LED current.
The 5,000 Vrms rating is the dielectric strength between input and output for 1 minute at 25 °C. It is designed to protect users from mains-referenced circuits (240 VAC peak = 340 V) plus safety margin for transient surges. Not for direct lightning or kV-level ESD.
Not recommended. PC817 bandwidth is ~100 kHz with slow edges, which fails at SPI speeds above a few hundred kHz and can cause I2C bus hang-ups. Use dedicated digital isolators like ISO7741 (SPI) or ISO1541 (I2C) instead.
Under continuous 10 mA drive at 25 °C, the LED maintains >50% initial output for 100,000+ hours. At 20 mA and 70 °C, life drops to ~20,000 hours. Derate the LED current to 5-10 mA for industrial designs expecting 10+ year life.
MOQ 100 pcs loose or 1,000 pcs on tape for PC817S (SOP-4). Sharp authorized channel 6-10 weeks; Shenzhen stock 1-2 days. Also stocked: Lite-On LTV-817C as direct equivalent.
