Founded: 1983 · HQ: Trondheim, Norway
Nordic Semiconductor ASA is the Norwegian fabless chipmaker that pioneered ultra-low-power 2.4 GHz radio silicon, founded in 1983 in Trondheim and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Nordic built its reputation on the nRF24 family of proprietary 2.4 GHz transceivers — the nRF24L01+ is arguably the most widely deployed hobbyist and industrial radio chip ever made, appearing in wireless sensors, RC toys, keyboards and Arduino projects by the tens of millions — before becoming the market leader in Bluetooth Low Energy SoCs with its nRF52 and nRF53 series. The nRF24L01+ integrates a complete 2.4 GHz GFSK transceiver with Enhanced ShockBurst packet engine, hardware CRC, auto-acknowledgment and retransmission, all controlled over a simple SPI bus, and delivers industry-leading RX sensitivity for its class. Nordic continues to support the nRF24 line alongside its modern BLE portfolio. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks nRF24L01+ chips and modules from Nordic authorized distribution, with RF verification on every lot to reject the clone dies that saturate the broker market.
Yes — it is one of the most counterfeited RF chips in existence. Fake nRF24L01+ parts use clone dies with lower transmit power, poorer RX sensitivity and non-compliant timing; the notorious counterfeit "nRF24L01+PA+LNA" modules often ship with a PA/LNA front end that is dead on arrival. We verify lots by measuring supply current in each mode (genuine: ~11.5 mA TX at 0 dBm, ~12.3 mA RX), confirming output power on a sample, and checking RF behavior against a known-good Nordic reference.
Si24R1 is a Chinese register-compatible clone of the nRF24L01+ — existing libraries work with minor caveats, and Si24R1 actually transmits at higher power. But it is not a Nordic part: shockburst timing, RX sensitivity and temperature behavior differ, and datasheet claims are not independently verified. We supply genuine Nordic nRF24L01+ only, and disclose clearly if you request clone-grade parts for cost-sensitive consumer builds.
Three things kill most nRF24 projects: insufficient power decoupling (the radio draws fast current spikes — put 10-100 µF bulk plus 100 nF at the module VCC), long SPI wires at high clock rates (keep SCK under ~4 MHz on jumper wires), and missing the CE/CSN timing in software. The bare chip needs a well-matched PCB antenna; for prototyping use the module version. At 250 kbps with Enhanced ShockBurst, genuine parts reach 100+ m line-of-sight; if yours manages 5 m, suspect a clone.
Nordic still lists the nRF24L01+ as in production, though the company steers new designs toward its nRF52 BLE SoCs. Authorized channel quotes 12-20 weeks; our Shenzhen warehouse holds chip and module stock for 1-3 day shipment. For new designs needing a long runway, we can also quote Nordic nRF52-series parts or pin out migration paths.
