Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) is a NASDAQ-listed (MPWR) analog and power semiconductor company founded in 1997 by Michael Hsing, headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, with design centers and fab operations spanning the US and Asia. MPS built its reputation on high-integration power management: DC-DC converters that pack controller, MOSFETs and protection into tiny packages at high switching frequencies. The MP1584EN is a textbook example — a 4.5-28 V input, 3 A output step-down converter in SOIC-8E switching at 1.5 MHz, which allows inductors a fraction of the size needed by older 150 kHz parts like the LM2596. MPS parts are widely used in industrial control, telecom, computing and consumer power stages, and the company's product line now covers motor drivers, LED drivers, battery management, isolation and automotive-grade (AEC-Q100) power. Our Shenzhen warehouse stocks the MP1584EN from MPS authorized distribution, with switching frequency and load-regulation verification on every lot to reject remarked clone dies.
Moderately — remarkers target MPS parts because the MP1584EN sells for a premium over generic buck ICs. Counterfeit dies typically switch at the wrong frequency, current-limit well below 3 A, or fail thermally at sustained load. We verify each lot by benching samples: confirm the 1.5 MHz switching node frequency, run a 3 A load step and measure regulation and thermal rise, and check package marking/laser codes against MPS's authentic format. All stock comes from MPS authorized distribution with lot traceability.
The LM2596 switches at 150 kHz and needs a 100 µH inductor; the MP1584EN switches at 1.5 MHz and works with 4.7-10 µH parts, shrinking the power stage by an order of magnitude. MP1584EN also has higher efficiency at light load, a wider 4.5-28 V input range (LM2596: 4.5-40 V but with much larger magnetics), and thermal/electrical protection. If board space matters or you need clean fast transient response, MP1584EN wins; for cost-driven 12 V-to-5 V rails with room for a big inductor, LM2596 remains viable.
3 A is the continuous switch-current-limited output with adequate PCB copper — the exposed pad needs a thermal via array into a ground plane. Efficiency peaks around 90% at 12 V in / 5 V out and mid-load; at 24 V input the duty cycle drops and conduction losses rise, so derate toward 2-2.5 A. Output voltage is set by the FB resistor divider (0.8 V reference). For loads beyond ~2.5 A continuous from high input voltages, step up to an MPS 5 A part or the XL4015.
MPS is a fully legitimate S&P MidCap 500 constituent, listed on NASDAQ since 2004, with annual revenue exceeding $2 billion and thousands of employees worldwide. MPS authorized channel quotes 12-20 weeks for popular buck converters. Our Shenzhen warehouse holds MP1584EN stock for 1-3 day shipment on quantities under 10,000 pcs, with original MPS tape-and-reel packaging, C-of-C and lot codes.
