Is the BME280 counterfeit-prone?
Yes — the most common fraud is relabeled BMP280 dies sold as BME280 at BME280 prices: you get pressure and temperature but the humidity readings are garbage (often constant 0% or ~37% nonsense). Verification is trivial if you know where to look: read the chip-ID register 0xD0 — genuine BME280 returns 0x60, while BMP280 returns 0x56, 0x57 or 0x58. We run this I²C/SPI check on samples from every lot, plus a humidity sanity test in a controlled chamber, before releasing stock.
What is the difference between BMP280 and BME280?
BMP280 measures pressure and temperature; BME280 adds relative humidity. They are not footprint-compatible: BMP280 is a 2.0 × 2.5 mm LGA-8, BME280 is a 2.5 × 2.5 mm LGA-8. Both share the same I²C address options (0x76/0x77 selected by SDO) and register-style interface with factory calibration coefficients. Pressure accuracy is ±1 hPa absolute (about ±0.12 °C equivalent altitude resolution), suitable for floor detection and drone vario use.

Yes — Bosch Sensortec GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH, the German engineering group, established in 2005 to focus Bosch's MEMS sensor business on consumer electronics and IoT markets.
