Clock and timing ICs provide the temporal reference that every digital system needs — from the 555 timer that has been blinking LEDs since 1971, to the DS3231 real-time clock that maintains ±2 ppm accuracy over a full year without GPS or NTP. Our inventory covers the NE555 (astable/monostable timer, 200 mA output drive) and the DS3231 (I²C RTC with integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator and battery backup). Both are available from TI and Analog Devices authorized channels with full lot traceability. For applications where timing accuracy matters — data loggers, utility meters, event recorders, alarm systems — the DS3231's integrated TCXO eliminates the drift that plagues discrete-crystal RTC designs.
NE555 is the classic bipolar version: 4.5-15 V supply, 10 mA quiescent current, 200 mA output drive. TLC555 and LMC555 are CMOS versions: 2-15 V supply, 250 µA quiescent current (40× lower), but lower output drive (100 mA). For battery-powered designs, always use the CMOS version. For driving relays or LEDs directly from a 5 V or 9 V supply, the bipolar NE555 is better.
DS3231 maintains ±2 ppm from 0-40 °C (about ±1 minute per year) thanks to its integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. A DS1307 with a standard 32.768 kHz crystal drifts ±20-100 ppm over temperature (±1-5 minutes per month). The DS3231 is roughly 30× more accurate without any external trimming or firmware compensation.
No — the TCXO is fully integrated. Just connect VCC, GND, SDA, SCL, VBAT (to a CR2032 coin cell for backup) and optionally the SQW/INT pin for alarm interrupts. This simplifies PCB layout and eliminates the crystal-calibration step that DS1307 designs require.
A fresh CR2032 (220 mAh) with the DS3231 drawing about 1 µA in backup mode gives 8-10 years of timekeeping. Use Panasonic, Maxell or Renata cells for reliable longevity — cheap no-name cells may leak or lose capacity in 2-3 years.
